Furniture, underwear and ship design from Sunnmøre

Furniture from Sunnmøre - The region of Ålesund & Sunnmøre is home to many international brands of furniture. The town Sykkylven, located about an hour from Ålesund, is world-famous for its many furniture factories. Plus a great part of the locals get their income from furniture production. The most known brands are Ekornes (Stressless®), Brunstad, Formfin and L.K. Hjelle. But there is also a niche factory called Cylindra, which makes a special line of furniture designed by Peter Opsvik who is also the designer behind the Tripp Trapp® highchair. Other known producers from the region are Stokke® and Slettvoll.

Furniture Museum - You can of course buy furniture from the different producers. However, the Furniture Museum in Sykkylven hosts an exhibition with more than a hundred years of furniture history and is therefore absolutely worth a visit!

Devold of Norway® - The year was 1853, the place was the weather-beaten coastline of Western Norway. The newly trained industrialist Ole Andreas Devold returned home (Ålesund) from Germany full of optimism. Devold brought back with him state-of-the-art mechanical knitting equipment and high hopes of selling his products: knitted woolen underwear and mittens. It did not take long for Devold to establish a reputation as a quality brand. Fifteen years later, Ole Andreas Devold’s sales were in full swing and, a few decades later, the German-educated Norwegian from the West Coast became the owner of one of the largest textile factories in Norway. Today the Devold of Norway products are found in shops from Langevåg to New York, and when you visit Ålesund & Sunnmøre you can visit the old mill in Langevåg, where you’ll find the Devoldfabrikken. The former mill is an outlet presenting different brands including the Devold of Norway outlet. It is also home to the Devold textile museum.

Bergen Wool Heritage Route

For over 5000 years wool has played a central role for the people on the coast of Norway. Visit the museums that tell the exciting story! This collection of museums in the Bergen region tells the full story about wool, sheep farming and the craftsmanship. Learn about how the landscape was cultivated at The Heathland centre at Lygra and taste the magnificent wild lamb in the restaurant Matstova. In the Textile Industry Museum, they tell the story of how the textile industry became the largest industry in Norway. Did you know that the Vikings travelled the world with raincoats made of wool? At the Osterøy museum you can learn more about this and other interesting facts. And at the Western Norway Emigration Centre, you can learn about the wool on the prairie.

Apple juice and salmon from Ryfylke

In the lushest area of Ryfylke, on a western hillside by the Fisterfjord in Hjelmeland, is Grønvik Gard. With climate and soil conditions ideal for growing apples, their apple juice is fresh and fruity, delicious and refreshing. Norwegian salmon is a delicacy worldwide. You can taste award-winning quality salmon from Kingmikal Salmon (Mikals Laks) at the smokehouse at Skiftun in Hjelmeland. They still smoke and marinate salmon from traditional recipes.

Beer crafting based on the purest mountain water
The brewers at Kinn Brewery are crafting beers in the English and Belgian traditions based on the purest mountain water from Sagafjellet. Ancient craftsmanship – open fermentation and bottle conditioning are important. None of the beers are ever pasteurized or filtered, and every one of them is brewed at the two breweries in Florø. At the microbrewery Vesle Kinn in Florø it’s possible to go on fixed guided tours where you can enter the brewery premises and learn about the brewing process and the history of Kinn Brewery.

"Taste of the Hardangervidda" & apple farming in Hardanger
The économusée-awarded farm Syse Gard in Ulvik is specialized in fruit and sheep farming. Gro and
Hans are running this typical Western Norwegian farm in the fifth generation. They offer farm visits, guided tours and dining based on the farm’s products, knowledge, tastes and traditions. They also run a farm shop, offering fruit preserves, lamb meat, apple juice & cider as well as fresh fruit when in season. All products are home-made and produced at the farm. Syse Gard and the farm shop are open all year round, guided tours and dining for groups on request.

Tunet på Haugen in Eidfjord consists of a farm shop and a farm restaurant. In the farm shop, both home-made and other locally produced specialities are sold. At the restaurant Mona and Hans Olav offer meals based on ingredients collected from the nearby Hardangervidda mountain plateau – herbs and deer & reindeer meat. Their signature dish is pit cooked meat, a traditional way of preparing meat. On request, groups may also join the process of pit cooking or participate in baking activities.

Beautiful glass art and a world of Rosemaling 

Explore beautiful art in the region of Haugesund. From local glass design to traditional Rosemaling used in an untraditional way. Formbar Glasstudio makes hand blown tableware, high-end glass design and art in their combined workshop, gallery and shop in Haugesund city centre. When visiting Formbar you might get a glimpse on how they produce their beautiful art. Moving from Haugesund city centre to Unni Marie’s world of rosemaling in Ølen. According to her there are no limits on what can be painted with rosemaling, and by visiting her store you will for sure experience that.

Nordfjord is home to the world`s best cream liqueur
Gardsbrenneriet in Gloppen is the only artisan Distillery in Nordfjord. They offer guided tours of the farm and distillery, as well as tasting all the varied products they make. They also produce Fjording Nordic Cream liqueur, which has been named the world's best cream liqueur for two years in a row. You will also find fashion and outdoor clothing from the region. Ricco Vero, Skogstad Sport, Frislid and Moods are designed in Nordfjord. If you would like to go horseback riding on Nordfjord’s own horserace the Fjord Horse, you can do that in Norwegian Fjord Horse Centre which also is the National centre for breeding and use of the Fjord Horse.

The National Costumes of the Romsdal Region 

The National Costume Workshop at the Romsdal Museum produces national costumes and accessories, for women and men. The workshop also makes “rutastakker” for children and adults and offer a rental service for bridal equipment. The costume workshop was established at the Museum in 1983. Locally, several versions of the male and female costume were already available, and the intention was to recreate a costume, similar to the one used in Romsdal before 1880. There is also a male costume with relevant accessory as well as accessories for the bride.

Homemade delicacies at Elins café & farm shop
Elin, the owner of the concept “Elins Matgleder”, has a passion and love for homemade food. You can experience her local food in her farm shop in Uskedalen: Homemade jam, pastries, delicacies and freshly baked bread – all made from her “secret” recipes. She has a nice restaurant available for groups on request. Did we mention the interior section? If you have a passion for interior products, the farm shop offers a selected range of cups, jugs and mugs. In the main street of Rosendal, Elins Matgleder welcomes you for enjoyable meals at Restaurant Fiolen and Café Hylleblomen. The restaurant and café are located next to each other. She serves salads, small dishes, pizza, desserts and cakes, homemade soups and local seasonal food. Elins matgleder also offers catering, and food for different events.

Try Voss Beer with the local speciality of smoked sheep’s head 

Voss Beer is a local beer with long traditions. Voss Bryggeri is a charming beer brewery overlooking the mountains of Voss. The brewery is keeping the old traditions of brewing beer, just like they did in Voss several hundred years ago. They have been known amongst craft beer fans throughout the world for their “kveik”-beer, which is a beer made with yeast.

Sheep's head, called "Smalahove" in Norwegian, is one of the oldest local traditional dishes from Voss. In the olden days the people in Voss ate the smoked sheep head to use every part of the animal, when they didn't have a lot of food. In the later years this has become a festive meal in Voss and is known all over the country. It is traditionally served with potatoes, (Voss) beer and aquavit.
Smalahovetunet is a family run business where they produce and serve smalahove all year round. They also have a farm building from the 1700s, where you can be served smalahove and other traditional dishes on request. After the meal, it is possible to get a guided tour of the farm and learn more about the production of smalahove.

Traditional Norwegian cuisine

Based in Naustdal, with a stunning view over Førdefjorden you find Håjen Kafe which specialize in traditional Norwegian cuisine. They pride themselves in sourcing the ingredients locally and are proud ambassadors of truly traditional Norwegian countryside cuisine. The meal is accompanied by a magnificent view over Førdefjorden, and the majestic mountain range Heilefjellet. Enhancing both the meal and the experience. At the premises, you will also find a traditional bakery that do “lefse”, flatbread and other local pastry favorites.

The Aurland Shoe - the only shoe factory in Norway 

Fashionistas know the term Penny Loafer. What they do not know is that the originals came from Aurland. Here the only shoe factory in Norway is located. Those interested in the local shoemaking tradition, can visit the Économusée all year round. 

There are landscapes so rare and beautiful that myths and legends are needed to explain their origin. The stave churches are an architectural marvel. 

The decorative elements represent a historical moment when the Viking myths and legends coexisted with a new national identity. Stave Churches influenced artists of the Norwegian Romantic Nationalism. Many painters spent their holidays in Balestrand, and some locations have been captured in their paintings. 

Today, visitors can join the Cultural Walk, see the famous dragon style villas and learn about interesting historical details of Balestrand.

High quality porcelain, wool and yarn from Region Stavanger

Figgjo - from traditional craftsmanship and modern machinery to stylish design to functional and durable porcelain. Figgjo is influenced by the under toned Scandinavian design language where belonging and traditions mean as much as food trends. Figgjo is a family-owned Norwegian company with long traditions. The products are resource efficient and have a sustainable lifespan. 

Sandnes Garn (wool and yarn) is known for its design, quality and deliverability. Sandnes Uldvarefabrik AS (Sandnes Garn AS in 2006) was established in Sandnes in 1888. Sandnes has traditionally been an industrial town where Sandnes Uldvarefabrik was one of the most central companies. They still have their production at Foss Eikeland in Sandnes. Sandnes Garn also has a factory outlet here.

LERVIG is an independently owned and run craft brewery in Stavanger. They produce a wide range of beers from easy-drinking lagers and pale ales to bold and complex stouts stored in kegs, Barley wines and sour beers. They recently opened Lervig Local, their first brewery pub in Stavanger.

MingarWalker Glassblåseri is local craftsmanship that inspires functional elegance. Line Mingar & Benjamin Walker met at the furnace in 1999 and have been blowing glass together ever since. They opened their glassblowing studio at Jæren in 2006 and have since built MingarWalker as a brand and offer many good experiences in their workshop.
